January Recap and February News

In January, our students learned all about Antarctica and the wildlife that lives in the arctic areas. We discussed arctic foxes, polar bears, seals, and more. The students talked in class about how some animals hibernate in the winter. We also learned all about snow and ice. The students discovered that snow and ice are both made from water, and we even created our own snow using corn starch and oil. The students felt the texture of the snow they made. One of our primary classrooms learned about icebergs by freezing winter animals in water and watching them melt the next day. Our students have been having a blast creating all types of winter art. We created polar bears out of tissue paper, igloos out of cotton balls, and much more.

Our book of the month was The Mitten by Jan Brett. The children enjoyed coloring the animals from the story of the mitten. After reading The Mitten, students discussed what type of clothes we wear when it’s cold outside. Our toddlers even tried on gloves and scarves and pretended they were in a cold winter place. In our Spanish classroom, the students learned winter words they can use when speaking Spanish. Our Spanish class is doing an amazing job, and we are so proud of them.

In February, we will be talking about cultural awareness and friendship. We will have lessons on how we can be good friends to one another and how we can be respectful of everyone. We will discuss our similarities and differences and how it is important to be accepting of our peers. In keeping with this theme, we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day! Our students will create their own Valentine’s to pass out to their classmates. The students will be creating lots of Valentine's Day art. We can’t wait to see what next month brings.
